A Message from Dianna Kunz, President & CEO
As the President of Volunteers of America Colorado Branch I am taking this opportunity to let you know that Volunteers of America was not involved in any way with the investment funds operated by Bernard L. Madoff or any of the other bad actors recently filling the headlines. Although our investments are quite modest by most standards, Volunteers of America has a very conservative and stringent investment policy which would have precluded placing any of our limited funds in any of these vehicles.
We realize that due to the recent losses in the market some donors are no longer able to help us as generously as they once did. Over the years we have built a comprehensive continuum of services designed to effectively serve our aging neighbors as well as those individuals and families facing homelessness and poverty. In these troubled economic times, however, we find ourselves facing a duel challenge. As an example an unprecedented number of low income seniors are attending our senior dining program sites and asking to join our Meals on Wheels program while we are faced with a significant reduction in philanthropic gifts.
Can you imagine the Volunteers of America Meals on Wheels Program having to cut seniors from the Meals on Wheels Program who are today receiving home delivered meals due to a lack of funds? We have never done so and do not plan on starting now. But in order to continue to protect our core values of serving those most in need and serving those who can donate only a token amount if any toward the costs of their meals, we need your support now more than ever.
Most of those we serve have never owned a share of stock or a 401(k) plan. Hunger and homelessness do not diminish based upon the vagaries of the market. We are confident that we will be able to continue to count on you for support in these difficult times. The American economy will rebound from this recession as it has in the past. In the meantime, Volunteers of America will continue to feed, shelter, support and care for those who need us so desperately.
If you have any questions or would like to speak to me (720-264-3320) or Michael James, our Director of Development (720-264-3322) please call us. Thank you so much for your support.
