Who We Are and What We Do
Three Important Ways You Can Help
|
|
The Safety of Seniors Handyman Program provides minor home repair services and safety modifications
for limited-income seniors, age 60 and older, who live in their
own homes and reside in Denver, Jefferson, Arapahoe and Adams
counties.* These seniors usually have few or no financial
resources to pay for handyman services. Most often they are
widowed or single women with one or more disabilities, and have
no one to help with maintenance. Our goal is to help them remain
safely and independently in their home for as long as possible.
In addition to minor repairs, we install safety devices and
provide educational materials to help reduce falls in the home,
the number one cause of serious injury and hospitalization for
seniors.
|
|
*Sorry,
we cannot provide service to mountain or rural areas. |
|
Services are provided by
skilled volunteer or staff handymen/women. All labor and repair
time provided by the Safety of Seniors Handyman Program is free
of cost to the senior. Additionally, for seniors using our
service for the first time, there is also no charge for
materials used. This is made possible by a grant from the Denver
Regional Council of Governments. For seniors who have used the
Handyman Program in previous years there is no charge for labor
or repair time, but they are asked to pay for materials used.
These repeat clients are informed of the cost of materials and
no repairs are undertaken until they approve. |

Three
important ways you can help the hundreds of limited-income seniors
we serve: |
1. If you have even a few
handyman skills, some basic tools and
can give a couple of hours a month, these seniors need you!
Many
have no one else. We will assign you only those repairs with
which
you feel comfortable. We serve four counties, but you can
request
assignments in specific areas only.
2. No handyman skills? You can still help by volunteering
as a
Handyman Fall Prevention Educator. We will show
you how to
conduct a Home Safety Assessment and make presentations
to seniors about fall prevention. Using Remembering When, a
nostalgia-based teaching device, you help seniors stay in
their
home, rather than having to move to a care facility because
of
a fall-related injury.
3. Not good with tools but you can help clean up a yard?
Yard
work is one of the most requested services we get from frail
seniors. Once, or as often as you wish, you, you and your
family
or you and a friend can provide this badly needed service to
help
them remain in their homes! Bless a senior! Become a
Handyman Yard Angel. |
