Beginning in May 2006, residents of Maltese Cross Manor in
West Denver have participated in the Steps to Healthier
Aging program sponsored by Volunteers of America and other
leading senior services organizations. During their
twice-weekly classes, they have become more physically
active, increased their nutritional knowledge and developed
healthier eating habits. The results have been wonderful!
|
| Bob
Freeman (far left) started attending the class on the urging
of his doctor to shed extra pounds. Bob has set the standard
for many in the class by walking off 25 pounds! His daily
walks take him around the block when the weather is nice…and
up and down the halls of his building when it’s too cold
outside. |
Melba Kolling and Lynne Hansen (center and right), have been
volunteer instructors since August 2006. Group activities,
peer support through a buddy system and
one-on-one nutrition counseling have
helped Melba, Lynne, and other class
members enjoy greater control over their health. One can see
those results in
their sunny dispositions and positive outlooks! |
 |
Bob, Melba and
Lynne are residents of Maltese Cross Manor and have received
volunteer instructor certification through the Arthritis
Foundation Exercise Program. Bob will join Melba and Lynne
as an instructor after the holiday break in January
2007. Their collective New Year goal --- get more of their
neighbors up and moving
and experiencing the value of healthy eating and physical
activity.
Steps to Healthier Aging programs are conducted in senior
housing facilities--12 to date-- throughout the Denver metro
area. The classes are taught by Registered Dietitians and
Exercise Physiologists on staff at Volunteers of America and
cover
new topics each week on nutrition education and physical
activity. |
Volunteers
of America administers the Steps to Healthier Aging program

initiative received from The Colorado Health Foundation,
