On Thursday,
Volunteers of America Colorado Branch was one of eight
recipients selected for the 2008 Dr. Martin Luther King
Holiday Commission Humanitarian Awards at the Boettcher
Concert Hall in the Denver Performing Arts Center. This
award is presented on behalf of the Colorado Civil Rights
Division to those individuals or organizations that have, in
varied and diverse ways, helped to make Dr. King’s dream a
reality — the dream of equal opportunities for all persons
to have a better life, regardless of their race, gender,
religion, or disability and for all individuals to be
treated in a fair and just manner.
Volunteers of America was chosen for hosting its annual MLK
event, A Dinner for Those Who Hunger. For 22 years, this
festive celebration honoring Martin Luther King has been
fostered by Colorado's Jim White and Virdell Miller and a
host of dedicated staff and volunteers. Since its beginning,
volunteers from Kaiser Permanente have attended the event.
For the past few years, Kaiser has not only financially
sponsored the event but has also offered free health
screenings to all of the guests. Each year, approximately
1000 people enjoy a wonderful BBQ dinner, accompanied by
glorious gospel, jazz, and rhythm and blues music, in honor
of the life of Dr. King, Jr. Arc Thrift donates thousands of
pieces of warm clothing for distribution and for several
hours the dream that we are all one family is realized.
