It was a Mother’s Day Brunch to be
remembered for 150 very special women. Noel Cunningham’s restaurant,
Strings on 17th Ave., graciously hosted this impressive private
party for the 15th consecutive year. The guest list included
women who have no family in town and would otherwise be alone on Mother’s
Day. Many ladies live in Volunteers of America’s Affordable Housing
Apartments or are Meals on Wheels recipients.
The annual event is the culmination of the RSVP program fundraiser, the I
Remember Mama tribute book; a keepsake booklet published with personal
messages written by financial contributors. Mothers, wives, or women of
special significance receive these booklets with their personalized
remembrances.
Metro Taxis carrying the guests rolled up to Strings like stretch
limousines to a celebrity event. Robert McBride, owner of Metro Taxi,
generously donated all transportation for the morning and underwrote the
printing costs for the keepsake books.
Stephanie Samora, Volunteers of America’s RSVP Project Manager, worked
tirelessly to ensure the Mother’s Day celebration was exquisite. Beautiful
gift bags were filled with donated souvenir items for each guest,
including Stephany’s Chocolates and Neiman Marcus skin care products, and
a rose was presented to each guest upon leaving. Strings’ menu included a
full array of choices including steak and eggs and steamed salmon. Tables
were adorned with bouquets of flowers and three talented young ladies
donated their time as strolling violinists.
A hat contest has become tradition at I Remember Mama. Some women come
adorned to rival the queen, while others use the opportunity to show their
good wit. The top winners of the hat contest received two gift
certificates from the Oxford Hotel and Spa, a gift certificate from King
Soopers, and four Rockies Baseball tickets.
