Chance to Believe benefit luncheon at the Grand Hyatt Denver is

thought it appropriate to remind ourselves and others of the
devastation such acts can cause,” commented Barnhill. “Denise is
a moving and engaging speaker and we look forward to welcoming
her on behalf of those left homeless in the face of such
danger.”
More than 500 people are expected to attend with proceeds
benefiting the Volunteers of America Brandon Center and the
Theodora House, both homeless shelters for women and projects of
the Volunteers of America Guild. Founded more than a decade ago,
The Guild has raised over $1million for these worthy causes. The
day includes the popular ‘Wishing Well’ drawing and a gourmet
luncheon prepared by the Grand Hyatt’s Executive Chef John
Treusein. Tickets are priced at $75, $100 and $150. Corporate
tables of ten are available for $2500, $5000 and $10,000.

WHEN: Tuesday May 22, 2007, 10a.m.
WHY: This is the most successful arc Thrift food drive to
date and the 2nd largest food drive in Colorado. More than 70
tons, or 140,000 lbs., of non-perishable food will be delivered to
the Volunteers of America’s City Harvest Warehouse. Generous
holiday donations of canned goods have been depleted and summer
food drives are essential.
The need is staggering: 12% of households in Colorado are food
insecure.
Colorado ranks 5th in the U.S. suffering from food insecurity.
arc Thrift provides funding to arc chapters, which in turn provide
advocacy for people with disabilities. arc Thrift is one of the
largest employers in Colorado of individuals with disabilities
(approximately 10% of employees). For more information visit

Volunteers of
America’s Felipe Lopez Recognized by Mayor’s Office -
May 1st, 2007 DENVER – On
Friday, April 27, 2007 Felipe Lopez, Volunteers of America Head
Start Worker, was honored by the Mayor’s Office. Maria Guajardo,
Executive Director of the Office of Education and Children,
awarded Lopez with the Heavy Lifter Award recognizing significant
contributions to the lives of children in Denver. It is intended
to honor those individuals who ‘do the heavy lifting’ in their
communities by making children and youth a top priority. Lopez
chuckled to discover Guajardo and her staff included a 5 lb.
barbell with the award, signifying Felipe’s hard work. Recipients
of the award are dedicated to the development, education, and
well-being of Denver’s young people.
Lopez has been working for Volunteers of America and the Head
Start Program for the last three years. Most recently he initiated
the Head Start/Colorado Ballet partnership, providing preschoolers
the opportunity to enroll in 10 week ballet classes. The
partnership will be expanded in the next year to include the
children of Rainbow House, a Volunteers of America program for
children and young people with HIV/AIDS.
Lopez has also worked to encourage the Latino community and
parents, especially fathers, to participate in their children’s
events. Lopez was moved and honored by the recognition, “I love to
work with these families; it gives me such joy. The families of
the Head Start children are the ones that deserve an award; they
have often had to overcome so many obstacles yet they continue to
focus on getting their children a good education.” Volunteers of
America is proud to have Felipe as part of the organization. |

Community Foundation - April 17, 2007
DENVER – Rose Community Foundation awarded the second

on March 23, 2007. The two-year grant totaling $220,000 supports
two VOA programs, Meals on Wheels and the Safety of Seniors
Handyman Program. Both programs are consistent with one of
Rose Community Foundation’s funding priorities – to promote and
enhance services for older adults and their caregivers so seniors
may remain safe and independent in their own homes.
Meals on Wheels is a Volunteers of America program delivering
meals to the homebound elderly. The Handyman Program is a
collective volunteer effort to provide minor home repairs and
safety
assessments for older adults and people with disabilities. Both
programs serve Denver metro area seniors. |
