For the homebound elderly, preparing meals can sometimes be a challenge. Volunteers of America Northern Colorado delivers frozen meals to homebound residents of Larimer County who are age 60 and over. Residents of Loveland and Estes Park will be referred to Meals on Wheels service providers in their area. The meals are delivered in boxes of five or seven meals and consist of an entrée and accompaniments such as vegetables, fruits, bread, and milk. Meals can be heated in either the oven or microwave. Deliveries are made once a week Monday through Friday, between 10:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Individuals in the program receive their meals on the same day of each week and usually from the same volunteer driver.
“I have my good days when I can cook, and on my bad days you come to the rescue.”
Each meal provides at least one third of the daily nutrient recommendation for older adults. The meals are low in fat, cholesterol, and sodium. Listed below are three examples of meals that can be enjoyed while participating in the Meals on Wheels program.
