Volunteers of America Colorado to Open New Food Operations Hub

Commerce City – Volunteers of America Colorado will welcome media on Thursday, June 15 for a ribbon cutting ceremony at its new Aging and Nutrition Services Center in Commerce City. The 54,000 square foot center will serve as a hub for VOAC’s Meals on Wheels operation as well as its City Harvest Food Bank. Leaders representing Adams County and Commerce City in both local and state governments are expected to attend the ceremony.

Having outgrown its previous location in RiNo, VOAC negotiated a sale with development firm EDENS on a location nearly double the size of its previous hub. Though the Aging and Nutrition Services Center has moved, VOAC will continue to operate from its administrative building on Larimer Street.

“We love Denver and we’re never leaving Denver, but we do need the extra elbow room,” said VOAC President and CEO Dave Schunk. “This facility gives us the space we need to grow and to try new things.”

“EDENS is proud to have had the opportunity to support the organization in opening this new operations hub while maintaining their presence in the heart of the RiNo neighborhood,” said EDENS Managing Director Tom Kiler. “Volunteers of America Colorado is a vital pillar in our community and this expansion will offer even more critical support to Coloradans in need.”

New additions include training areas, a rec room for staff, and a test kitchen, which VOAC hopes can be utilized by everyone from entrepreneurs to individuals receiving other services through the organization.

“A meal is a chance at a relationship,” said Schunk. “A relationship is a chance at a transformed life. We’re going to make a lot of new friends and change of lot lives because of this new facility.”

VOAC provides Meals on Wheels services to nearly 2,700 people across the Denver Metro area. VOAC’s City Harvest, known among staff as the food bank for other food banks, keeps shelves stocked at churches, homelessness outreach programs, and women’s shelters. VOAC estimates more than 42,000 Coloradans were fed through City Harvest in 2022 alone.
