After years of cycling in and out of housing, one Northern Colorado veteran had started to believe stability simply was not possible.
He had experienced chronic homelessness for years and had previously received housing support through VOA Colorado’s Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program. But ongoing mental health challenges and other barriers made it difficult to maintain long-term housing.
This time, the approach looked different.
Recognizing that traditional solutions were not enough, the SSVF team in Fort Collins partnered closely with the VA to create a more individualized plan focused on long-term stability, trust, and consistent support.
Over several months, the case manager and VA team worked persistently to locate and engage the veteran, who was often difficult to find and hesitant to accept help. Through patience, relationship-building, and collaboration, they were able to stay connected and slowly move toward a housing solution that truly fit his needs.
One of the biggest breakthroughs came when the case manager worked closely with a landlord willing to give the veteran another opportunity despite past housing challenges. When financial barriers threatened to delay the placement, the team secured alternative community resources to cover the security deposit and keep the process moving forward.
Today, the veteran is stably housed with a housing voucher and ongoing clinical case management support through the VA.
For the first time in years, he has a place where he feels comfortable and secure. He can work on his car, spend time with his dog, and live without the constant fear of losing his housing.
His story is a reminder that ending homelessness is rarely about a single moment. It is about persistence, partnership, and creating solutions built around the individual.
Because of the coordinated support from VOA Colorado, the VA, and community partners, this veteran now has more than housing. He has stability, dignity, and the opportunity to move forward.
